Welcome to The National Physio, where we are dedicated to transforming adults and children’s lives through expert neurological physiotherapy. Our highly skilled and compassionate team of neurological physiotherapists understand the unique challenges an individual faces when dealing with neurological conditions.

What Neurological Physiotherapy Is For Paeds...

At The National Physio, we provide rehabilitation to children with a range of neurological disorders. Our physiotherapists have expertise in assessing and treating paediatric patients with conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. The primary goal of paediatric neurological physiotherapy is to optimize a child's movement and development, functional abilities and overall well-being. Our physiotherapists are able to provide treatment for a wide variety of paediatric neurological disorders. These include, but are not limited to:

Cerebral Palsy

Paediatric Cerebral Palsy affects movement, posture and muscle co-ordination of children, caused by abnormal brain development or damage to the developing brain. This usually occurs before or during birth. Paediatric CP benefits from physiotherapy, focusing in upon motor skills, muscle tone management, gait training, pain management and functional abilities.

Developmental Delays

Developmental delays in children refer to significant delays or deviations in achieving developmental milestones compared to their peers. These delays can affect various areas, including motor skills, language, cognition, and social-emotional

development. Identifying and addressing these developmental delays early aims to maximise the child's potential and preventing the progression of delays. Physiotherapy is a valuable and holistic approach to addressing developmental delays in children, targeting motor skills, cognitive development, and overall well-being. Our physiotherapists aim to help children overcome challenges, reach their developmental milestones, and build a foundation for a healthier and more fulfilling future.

Genetic Disorders

Genetic conditions in children encompass a wide range of disorders caused by abnormalities in their genetic material. These conditions can affect various aspects of a child's development, including motor skills, musculoskeletal health, and overall physical well-being. By addressing motor challenges and therefore promoting independence, physiotherapy plays a crucial role in optimizing the potential and improving the quality of life for children with genetic conditions.

Spinal Cord Diseases

A spinal cord injury is damage to the spinal cord that results in a loss of function, sensation, or mobility. The severity and extent of impairment can vary depending on the location and extent of the injury. Physiotherapy is essential in the rehabilitation of spinal cord injury patients. A patients treatment plan after spinal injury will incorporate mobility training, strengthening the weakened muscles, balance and coordinati0on training and general pain management. Maximizing independence of spinal cord injury patients is pivotal to our physiotherapists.

Brain and Spinal Cord Cancers

Brain and spinal cord cancers, known as central nervous system (CNS) tumors, can be benign or malignant growths originating from brain or spinal cord tissues. Benign tumors grow slowly and do not spread, while malignant tumors grow rapidly and can metastasize to other parts of the CNS. Common types include gliomas, meningiomas, medulloblastomas, and schwannomas. Symptoms vary but may include headaches, seizures, weakness, and changes in cognitive function. Treatment involves surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy tailored to tumor type, size, and patient health. Early detection is crucial for better outcomes.

Movement & Neuromuscular Disorders

Movement and neuromuscular disorders are conditions that affect the normal functioning of the muscles, resulting in difficulties with movement, coordination, strength, or muscle control. These disorders can arise from various causes, including genetic factors, injuries, infections, autoimmune conditions, and degenerative changes in the nervous system.

Brain Injuries

Brain injury in paediatric patients refers to damage or trauma that affects the brain, resulting from various causes such as accidents, falls, infections, or medical conditions. This injury can disrupt normal brain function and development, leading to a range of physical, cognitive, and behavioural challenges. Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in the management and rehabilitation of paediatric brain injury patient's, increasing motor function, preventing contractures and improving functional independence.

How treatment is completed

At The National Physio, we work closely with both the patient and their families to produce individualised treatment plans. These tailored plans often involve a combination of play-based exercises, developmental activities and therapeutic interventions aimed to target and improve both gross and fine motor skills, co-ordination and overall physical function.

Multiple key aspects constitute towards paediatric neurological physiotherapy. At The National Physio, we incorporate many factors into the patient’s treatment plan:

Family

Family-Centred Care

A child's therapy includes more than just the patient. Involving parents, caregivers and teachers into the treatment process allows education and exercises to be provided daily to support ongoing progress for the child.

Playing with Baby

Play-Based Therapy

Ensuring the child is engaged with treatment is key to developmental progress. Within the tailored treatment plan, our physiotherapists utilize play and age-appropriate exercises and activities to ensure an enjoyable programme for the child. Active participation is essential for progression.

Physiotherapy Rehabilitation Technology

Adaptation and Modification

At the National Physio, we consider all aspects of the child's sensory requirements. To meet the child's unique needs and maximise treatment efficiency, our physiotherapists modify and adapt activities and equipment every session to accommodate progression.

A unique and personalised treatment programme is crucial for a child's progression. At the National Physio, recognising the uniqueness of each child and their individual needs is at the

forefront of all treatment. Providing a comprehensive, individualized approached addresses the child's specific challenges, promoting optimal development and functional independence.

Hydrotherapy – what this is in more detail, what it treats, how it helps, the benefits of it...

Hydrotherapy is a specialised therapeutic method, conducted in warm water, used for treatment in adults and children, benefiting a wide variety of neurological conditions. Our physiotherapists have specialist experience providing hydrotherapy treatment for our patients, incorporating into treatment plans when beneficial. Our facilities ensure ease of access for all abilities, including wheelchair users and patients with reduced mobility.

Hydrotherapy utilizes the physical properties of water, including buoyancy, resistance, and hydrostatic pressure, to facilitate healing and increase an individual's range of movement. It can be used as a singular treatment or in conjunction with alternative treatment methods.

Hydrotherapy presents benefits to a variety of conditions:

- Musculoskeletal Conditions: Arthritis, Fibromyalgia

- Neurological Conditions: Stroke, MS, Cerebral Palsy

- Orthopaedic Conditions: Post-Surgery Rehabilitation

- Chronic Pain Conditions: CPS

- Age-Related Conditions: Balance and Mobility, Osteoporosis

- Paediatric Conditions: Developmental Delays, Genetic Disorders, CP
